Drag racing

Drag racing is a form of motor racing in which vehicles accelerate from a standing start along a straight track. Races commonly cover a quarter-mile or an eighth-mile, with the winner determined by elapsed time or reaching the finish first.

Christmas tree (drag racing): A vertical signal system that sequences a countdown and start lights for drag racers. Its staged lights govern when each vehicle may launch and how start reaction is measured.
Quarter-mile: A distance of 1,320 feet, commonly used as a standard drag-racing course length. It is the traditional race distance, though many tracks also run eighth-mile events.
