Duchy of Saxony

The Duchy of Saxony was a major medieval polity in northern Germany, ruled by the Ottonian dynasty before its breakup and transformation into a complex territorial title.

Stem Duchy of Saxony: A large early medieval tribal duchy that formed one of the principal regions of the East Frankish kingdom. The duchy emerged from this older Saxon political region.
Otto I, Holy Roman Emperor: King of Germany from 936 and Holy Roman Emperor from 962 until his death in 973. He combined the Saxon duchy’s dynastic power with kingship and empire.
Ducal investiture: The formal grant of a duchy and its governing rights by a king or emperor. Royal appointment shaped the authority of Saxony’s dukes.
