Duralumin

Duralumin is a high-strength, age-hardenable aluminum alloy, traditionally containing copper, magnesium, and manganese. Its strength develops through heat treatment and aging.

Age hardening: A heat-treatment process that strengthens an alloy as solute atoms form fine precipitates within its metal matrix. Duralumin gains much of its strength as copper-rich precipitates form during aging.
Aluminum alloy: A metallic material made primarily of aluminum with added elements that alter its properties. Duralumin is one specific, historically influential aluminum alloy.
Aircraft: Vehicles designed to fly through the atmosphere using lift generated by wings or rotors. Duralumin became widely used in aircraft structures where low mass and strength mattered.
Alfred Wilm: A German metallurgist who discovered age hardening in an aluminum-copper alloy in the early twentieth century. Wilm’s experiments led to the alloy later known as duralumin.
Solution heat treatment: Heating an alloy to dissolve soluble elements into a solid solution, followed by rapid cooling to retain them. This prepares duralumin for the later aging step that raises its strength.
Copper: A metallic chemical element with symbol Cu, used in alloys for strength and electrical conductivity. Copper enables the principal age-hardening response in traditional duralumin.
Airship: A powered lighter-than-air craft whose lift comes from a gas-filled envelope. Duralumin frameworks enabled large, lightweight rigid airships.
Dürener Metallwerke: A German metalworking company that produced and commercialized duralumin. The company helped turn Wilm’s discovery into an industrial alloy.
Precipitation hardening: Strengthening a metal by forming fine particles that impede dislocation motion. Fine precipitates obstruct deformation in aged duralumin.
Magnesium: A lightweight metallic element with symbol Mg, commonly added to aluminum alloys. Magnesium contributes to the composition and strengthening behavior of duralumin.
