Dutch literature

Literature associated with the Netherlands, usually written in Dutch but sometimes including works in other languages. Its history spans medieval texts, a major seventeenth-century flowering, and modern writing.

Beatrijs: A Middle Dutch poem about a nun who leaves her convent and is ultimately restored through Marian grace. This medieval narrative is among the best-known surviving works of Dutch literature.
Middle Dutch: The historical form of Dutch used roughly from the twelfth through the fifteenth centuries. It is the language of many surviving medieval Dutch literary texts.
Joost van den Vondel: A seventeenth-century Dutch poet and playwright, celebrated for his tragedies and religious verse. His plays and poetry helped establish the stature of Dutch Golden Age literature.
Flemish literature: Literature associated with Flanders, the Dutch-speaking region of Belgium. It shares Dutch with Netherlands writing but developed within a distinct regional and political history.
Max Havelaar: An 1860 novel by Multatuli that condemns colonial exploitation in the Dutch East Indies. Its attack on colonial rule reshaped Dutch public debate and literary form.
Hadewijch: A thirteenth-century Dutch poet and mystic known for her love songs, visions, and letters. Her writings show the sophistication of early Dutch devotional literature.
Multatuli: The pen name of Eduard Douwes Dekker, a nineteenth-century Dutch writer and critic of colonial rule. His Max Havelaar joined literary innovation to a direct challenge to Dutch colonialism.
Afrikaans literature: Literature written in Afrikaans, a language that developed from Dutch in southern Africa. Its linguistic ancestry connects it to Dutch while its national tradition is distinct.
The Evenings: A 1947 novel by Gerard Reve following ten monotonous days in the life of Frits van Egters. Its bleak postwar portrait became a defining Dutch novel of its generation.
Reinaert the Fox: A Middle Dutch animal epic whose trickster fox outwits rivals, drawing on the European Reynard tradition. It is a major medieval Dutch adaptation of a widely circulating literary story.
