Dutch Reformed Church

The Calvinist Protestant church established in the Netherlands during the Reformation, closely tied to the Dutch Republic and later reorganized into successor churches.

John Calvin: A French theologian whose writings shaped Reformed Protestant theology. His theology supplied the church’s defining doctrinal framework.
Belgic Confession: A 1561 Reformed confession of faith written by Guido de Brès for churches in the Low Countries. It became one of the church’s central statements of doctrine.
Consistory: A local church council, commonly composed of ministers and elders, that oversees congregational affairs. Consistories governed local congregations and exercised discipline.
Remonstrants: A Dutch Protestant movement that defended views associated with Jacobus Arminius, especially on grace and predestination. Their dispute with the Reformed orthodox prompted the Synod of Dort.
Separation of church and state in the Netherlands: The gradual dismantling of the Dutch Reformed Church’s privileged state relationship, especially after 1795. The Batavian Revolution ended the church’s formal public privilege.
Dutch Revolt: The revolt of the Low Countries against Spanish Habsburg rule, beginning in 1568. The church’s fortunes became closely linked to the revolt against Spanish Catholic authority.
Heidelberg Catechism: A 1563 Protestant catechism organized around human sin, salvation, and gratitude. Its teaching shaped worship and religious instruction in Dutch Reformed communities.
Classis: A regional council of Reformed churches represented by their ministers and elders. Classes connected congregations and reviewed local church decisions.
Mennonites: A Christian tradition descended from the Anabaptist movement and named for Menno Simons. They remained a distinct Dutch Protestant community rather than joining the established church.
Dutch colonial empire: The overseas territories and trading networks governed or controlled by the Dutch Republic and its successors. Dutch Reformed institutions accompanied colonial rule and missionary activity overseas.
