Early medieval India

Early medieval India is the period of South Asian history spanning roughly the sixth through thirteenth centuries, marked by regional kingdoms, expanding agrarian settlements, and changing religious and social institutions.

Gupta Empire: An ancient Indian empire that ruled much of northern India from the fourth to sixth centuries. Its decline preceded the political fragmentation commonly used to mark this period’s beginning.
Indian land grants: Transfers of land or land revenue, often recorded on copper plates, to religious institutions and individuals. Grants linked royal authority to local beneficiaries and helped extend cultivation.
Pulakeshin II: A seventh-century Chalukya ruler who expanded his power across much of the Deccan. His conflict with Harsha illustrates the limits of northern expansion into the Deccan.

Dharmapala: An eighth-century Pala ruler who expanded Pala influence across eastern and northern India. His reign anchors the Pala role in the struggle for Kannauj and Buddhist patronage.
Alvars: Tamil poet-saints who composed devotional hymns to Vishnu between the sixth and ninth centuries. Their hymns helped establish Tamil Vaishnava devotion and temple-centered worship.
Pala Empire: A Buddhist-leaning dynasty that ruled much of Bengal and Bihar from the eighth to twelfth centuries. Its eastern kingdom contrasts with the chiefly Shaiva and Vaishnava powers dominant elsewhere.
