Knowra East African Community East African Community The East African Community is a regional intergovernmental organization that promotes economic, political, and social cooperation among East African states through shared institutions and integration programs.
East African Community Customs Union : A regional trade arrangement that removes internal tariffs and applies a common external tariff among participating EAC states. It is the EAC’s first major integration stage, intended to expand trade within the region.
East African High Commission : A colonial-era regional administrative body that coordinated selected services in Kenya, Uganda, and Tanganyika. It was an institutional predecessor to post-independence regional cooperation.
Yoweri Museveni : A Ugandan politician who has served as president since 1986. He signed the treaty re-establishing the EAC and has remained a central regional leader.
Northern Corridor : A regional transport network linking the Port of Mombasa to landlocked East African countries and areas beyond. It connects EAC trade to the Indian Ocean through a major shared logistics route.
African Union : A continental organization of African states that promotes unity, cooperation, and political and economic integration. The EAC is a subregional organization within the wider continental framework of the African Union.
East African Community Common Market : An EAC arrangement supporting the movement of goods, services, capital, and people across member-state borders. It extends integration beyond goods by providing for cross-border movement and economic activity.
East African Common Services Organisation : A regional body created in 1961 to coordinate shared services among Kenya, Uganda, and Tanganyika. It carried forward common-service arrangements after the East African High Commission.
Amani Abeid Karume : A Tanzanian politician who served as president of Zanzibar from 2000 to 2010. He signed the 2007 accession treaty through which Zanzibar became part of the EAC framework as part of Tanzania.
Central Corridor : A transport and logistics network linking Tanzania’s Port of Dar es Salaam with inland East and Central Africa. It gives EAC members an alternative route to maritime trade.
Intergovernmental Authority on Development : A regional organization in the Horn of Africa focused on development, drought resilience, and peace and security. Its overlapping regional membership comes with a different geographic focus and institutional mandate.
