East China Sea

The East China Sea is a marginal sea of the western Pacific Ocean, bounded by China, Taiwan, Japan, and South Korea. It connects to the Yellow Sea and the Pacific through the Korea and Taiwan straits.

Okinawa Trough: A deep submarine trough extending along the Ryukyu Islands in the East China Sea. It separates the shallow continental shelf from the deeper western Pacific margin.
East China Sea fisheries: Commercial and subsistence fisheries operating in the East China Sea. The sea’s shallow shelf and nutrient supply sustain valuable fishing grounds.
Senkaku Islands dispute: A territorial dispute over islands administered by Japan and claimed by China and Taiwan. The islands lie in the sea and anchor competing maritime claims.

Yellow Sea: A shallow marginal sea between mainland China and the Korean Peninsula. The East China Sea reaches it through the waters between China and Korea.
East China Sea gas fields: Offshore natural-gas fields and exploration areas beneath the East China Sea. Competing claims over seabed resources have shaped regional disputes.
East China Sea Air Defense Identification Zone: An air defense identification zone declared by China over parts of the East China Sea in 2013. Its overlap with other countries’ zones intensified regional tensions.
2008 China–Japan consensus on the East China Sea: A 2008 political understanding on joint development of parts of the East China Sea. It proposed cooperation over resources but was not fully implemented.
Taiwan Strait: A strait separating Taiwan from mainland China and linking the East China Sea with the South China Sea. It forms the sea’s southern passage toward the South China Sea.
Shanghai: A major Chinese port city at the mouth of the Yangtze River. Its port depends on access across the East China Sea.
