Eastern Hemisphere

The half of Earth east of the prime meridian and west of the 180th meridian, encompassing most of Europe, Africa, Asia, and Australia.

Prime Meridian: The 0° line of longitude, defined by the international reference meridian through Greenwich, England. It marks the western boundary of the Eastern Hemisphere.
Europe: A continent comprising the western peninsula of Eurasia and its nearby islands. Most of Europe lies within the Eastern Hemisphere.
Geographic coordinate system: A system for locating positions on Earth using latitude and longitude. It expresses the hemisphere’s boundary lines as coordinates.
Northern Hemisphere: The half of Earth north of the equator. It divides Earth by latitude, unlike the Eastern Hemisphere’s longitude-based division.
180th Meridian: The line of longitude opposite the prime meridian, lying mostly in the Pacific Ocean. It marks the hemisphere’s eastern boundary.
Africa: A continent south of Europe, bordered by the Atlantic and Indian Oceans. Nearly all of Africa lies east of the prime meridian.
Latitude: The angular distance of a location north or south of the equator. It pairs with longitude to locate places within the hemisphere.
Southern Hemisphere: The half of Earth south of the equator. Its division follows the equator rather than the prime meridian.
Longitude: The angular distance of a location east or west of a reference meridian. Longitude determines which side of the prime meridian a place occupies.
Asia: Earth’s largest continent, extending from the eastern Mediterranean to the Pacific Ocean. Most of Asia falls within this hemisphere.
