Eastern Jin

The Eastern Jin was a Chinese dynasty that ruled much of southern China from 317 to 420, after the Western Jin collapsed under northern invasions.

Western Jin: The Jin dynasty that ruled a unified China from 266 to 316 before collapsing amid civil war and northern invasions. Its fall drove the Jin court and many refugees south, where Eastern Jin was established.
Wang Dun: A powerful Eastern Jin general who led two rebellions against the central court in the 320s. His revolt exposed the limits of imperial control over military governors.
Chinese diaspora: The movement and settlement of Chinese people beyond their places of origin, within China and abroad. The southward flight from the north during Jin collapse transformed communities across the Yangtze region.
Expedition of Huan Wen against Cheng Han: Huan Wen’s 347 campaign that conquered Cheng Han, a state in the Sichuan Basin. The campaign was a rare Eastern Jin recovery of territory far beyond its southern core.
War of the Eight Princes: A civil war among princes of the Western Jin that devastated the dynasty from 291 to 306. The conflict weakened the regime before northern forces overran its northern heartland.
Huan Wen: An Eastern Jin general and statesman who dominated court politics and led campaigns against northern regimes. His military power let him pressure the court and briefly seek the throne.
Six Dynasties: A sequence of six dynasties that ruled from Jiankang in southern China between 220 and 589. Eastern Jin began the long succession of southern courts centered on Jiankang.
Expedition of Huan Wen against Former Yan: Huan Wen’s 369 campaign against Former Yan that ended in a major Jin defeat. Its failure showed the risks of relying on ambitious generals to recover northern territory.
Yongjia upheaval: A period of warfare and displacement in 311–316 that culminated in the Western Jin court’s collapse. The upheaval forced Jin elites to rebuild imperial government south of the Yangtze.
Xie An: An Eastern Jin statesman who coordinated resistance to Former Qin’s invasion in 383. His political leadership helped align court forces and powerful families during the crisis.
