École des Beaux-Arts is France’s leading state art school, centered in Paris. It taught academic methods and prepared artists for recognition through official institutions and exhibitions.

Academic art: Art produced within institutions that teach established principles of technique, genre, and style. The school institutionalized academic standards in French art education.
Royal Academy of Painting and Sculpture: A French institution founded in 1648 to regulate and teach painting and sculpture. It supplied the institutional predecessor and academic traditions inherited by the school.
