Edward the Martyr

Edward the Martyr was king of the English from 975 until his assassination in 978. Later venerated as a saint, he became a focus of disputes over his succession and burial.

Edgar the Peaceful: King of the English from 959 to 975, whose death left the succession contested between his sons. His death in 975 opened the disputed succession Edward inherited.
Corfe Castle: A castle in Dorset whose site is associated with Edward the Martyr’s assassination in 978. The traditional account places Edward’s fatal encounter at this site.
