Egyptian agriculture

Egyptian agriculture is the cultivation of crops in Egypt, concentrated along the Nile Valley and delta. Its history and methods have been shaped by the river’s seasonal floods and irrigation.

Nile flood cycle: The annual rise and fall of the Nile, historically depositing water and fertile sediment across its floodplain. Its seasonal inundation supplied fields with water and renewed soil before modern river regulation.
Nile Valley: The narrow cultivated corridor along the Nile in southern and central Egypt. Its irrigable land forms the main agricultural zone beyond the northern delta.
Neolithic Revolution: The transition in several regions from mobile foraging to settled farming and domesticated food production. Egyptian crop cultivation emerged within this wider prehistoric transformation.
Aswan High Dam: A dam completed across the Nile at Aswan in 1970 to control floods and store water in Lake Nasser. Its regulation of the river expanded year-round irrigation while reducing flood-borne sediment downstream.
Basin irrigation: An irrigation method that directs floodwater into enclosed fields, where it remains until the soil is saturated. This traditional system made the Nile’s flood pulse usable across broad fields.
Nile Delta: The broad, branching river delta in northern Egypt where the Nile enters the Mediterranean Sea. Its waterways and soils distinguish northern farming from cultivation in the narrow valley.
Predynastic Egypt: The period of Egyptian history before the formation of the unified pharaonic state, ending around 3100 BCE. Communities along the Nile cultivated crops before political unification.
Egyptian cotton: A long-staple cotton variety grown in Egypt and valued for fine textile fibers. Its export value shaped land use, state policy, and Egypt’s ties to global markets.
Nile silt: Fine sediment carried by the Nile and deposited on its floodplain and delta. These deposits replenished farmland with mineral-rich material before the Aswan High Dam trapped much of the sediment.
Wheat: A cereal grain cultivated widely for food, fodder, and other products. It is a major winter crop and staple grain in Egypt.
