Egyptian monarchy

Egypt’s constitutional monarchy from independence in 1922 until the Free Officers’ revolution in 1952, ruled by the Muhammad Ali dynasty.

Constitution of 1923: Egypt’s constitution established in 1923, which created a parliamentary system under a hereditary monarch. It set the monarchy’s formal powers and the framework for parliamentary government.
Unilateral Declaration of Egyptian Independence: Britain’s 1922 declaration ending its protectorate over Egypt while reserving control over four major matters. It made Egypt formally independent while leaving British authority over key affairs unresolved.
Fuad I of Egypt: King of Egypt from 1922 until his death in 1936, and the kingdom’s first monarch. His reign established the crown’s contentious relationship with constitutional government.
Republic of Egypt: The Egyptian republican state established after the monarchy was abolished in 1953. It replaced hereditary kingship with a republic led by military-backed political authorities.

Sultanate of Egypt: The Egyptian state ruled by a sultan from 1914 until its transformation into a kingdom in 1922. The sultanate immediately preceded the kingdom and supplied its first monarch.
Farouk of Egypt: King of Egypt from 1936 until his forced abdication in 1952. His rule ended amid military defeat, political instability, and the Free Officers’ coup.
Abolition of the monarchy in Egypt: The 1953 legal termination of Egypt’s monarchy and proclamation of a republic. It formally ended the royal institution after the king had already abdicated.
Wafd Party: An Egyptian nationalist political party founded in 1919 that became a major force in parliamentary politics. The Wafd’s electoral strength challenged royal attempts to control successive governments.
Muhammad Ali dynasty: The dynasty founded by Muhammad Ali that ruled Egypt from the early nineteenth century until 1953. Its rulers supplied every monarch of the 1922–1953 kingdom.
