Elbe

The Elbe is a major Central European river that flows from the Czech Republic through Germany to the North Sea.

Vltava: The longest river in the Czech Republic, joining the Elbe at Mělník. Its confluence with the Elbe gathers water from Prague and much of Bohemia.
Port of Hamburg: Germany’s largest seaport, located on the lower Elbe. Its seagoing access depends on the navigable Elbe estuary.
Giant Mountains: A mountain range on the Czech–Polish border containing the Elbe’s source area. The river rises on the Czech side of this range.
Elbe Day: The name given to the April 1945 meeting of American and Soviet troops at the Elbe near Torgau. The river became a symbolic meeting point as Allied forces advanced across Germany.
Moldau–Elbe confluence: The junction at Mělník where the Vltava meets the Elbe. This junction marks the point where the Elbe becomes the main downstream channel through Bohemia.
Port of Magdeburg: An inland port on the Elbe in the German city of Magdeburg. It links Elbe shipping with canals and inland waterways in central Germany.
Elbe Sandstone Mountains: A sandstone mountain region along the Czech–German border carved by the Elbe and its tributaries. The river cuts through this distinctive landscape in its upper course.
Inner German border: The fortified boundary between East Germany and West Germany from 1949 to 1990. Parts of the Elbe formed this Cold War frontier, restricting access to the river.
Havel: A major river in northeastern Germany that joins the Elbe near Havelberg. Its basin adds a substantial tributary network to the Elbe in northern Germany.
Elbe–Lübeck Canal: A canal connecting the Elbe near Lauenburg with Lübeck and the Baltic Sea. It provides a navigable route from the Elbe basin toward the Baltic.
