Electric bicycle

An electric bicycle is a bicycle equipped with an electric motor that assists pedaling or, in some designs, propels the bicycle without pedaling.

Pedal-assist: A mode in which an electric motor supplies power in response to a rider's pedaling. It describes the defining assistance mode on most electric bicycles.
Bicycle drivetrain: The components that transfer a cyclist's pedaling force to a bicycle's driven wheel. Electric assistance supplements this mechanical path rather than replacing it.
Cargo bike: A bicycle designed to carry substantial loads or passengers. Electric assistance makes heavy loads and starts more manageable.
Pedelec: An electric bicycle whose motor assists only while the rider pedals. It contrasts with designs that provide motor power through a throttle.
Modal shift: A change in the share of travel made by different transportation modes. Electric bicycles can replace some short car trips or extend cycling's reach.
Throttle (motorcycle): A control that requests motor power independently of pedaling. Throttle operation distinguishes some electric bicycles from pedal-only assistance systems.
Hub motor: An electric motor built into a wheel hub to drive that wheel directly. It places propulsion at the wheel instead of routing it through the bicycle drivetrain.
Electric mountain bike: A mountain bike with a motor that assists riding on off-road terrain. It applies electric assistance to steep climbs and technical trail riding.
Speed pedelec: A pedal-assist electric bicycle designed to provide assistance at higher speeds than ordinary pedelecs. Its higher assisted speed often brings different legal treatment.
Micromobility: Small, lightweight vehicles used for short-distance urban travel. Electric bicycles are one mode within this broader transport category.
