Electrical insulation

Electrical insulation prevents unwanted electric current by separating conductive regions with materials that resist charge movement. It also helps control electric fields and protect people and equipment from electric shock.

Electrical resistivity: Electrical resistivity measures how strongly a material opposes electric current. Its value determines how much current an insulating material permits.
Electrical conductor: An electrical conductor contains mobile charge carriers that permit electric current to flow. Insulation works by separating conductive regions rather than allowing them to connect.
Insulation coordination: Insulation coordination selects insulation strength and protective devices to withstand expected electrical stresses. It matches insulation levels to overvoltages in power systems.
Air insulation: Air insulation uses gas-filled spacing to electrically separate conductors. Air gaps provide insulation without a solid barrier, but their strength depends on geometry and pressure.
Dielectric strength: Dielectric strength is the maximum electric field a material can withstand before electrical breakdown. It sets the field limit beyond which insulation can fail.

Dielectric: A dielectric is an insulating material that can be polarized by an electric field. The term highlights the field response of materials used to separate charged regions.
