Electricity demand

Electricity demand is the rate at which users or equipment consume electrical energy, measured as power over time. It varies with activity, weather, technology, and time of day.

Electrical load: Electrical load is the power drawn from an electrical system by connected devices or equipment. It describes the equipment-level draw that adds up to electricity demand.
Electricity demand forecasting: Electricity demand forecasting estimates future power consumption over short or long time horizons. Forecasts guide decisions about generation, reserves, and network investment.
Electric power system: An electric power system generates, transmits, distributes, and controls electricity for users. Its components must collectively serve demand while maintaining reliable operation.

Electric grid: An electric grid is the interconnected network that transports electricity from generators to consumers. High or concentrated demand can require upgrades to local and regional network capacity.
Electrical energy: Electrical energy is energy transferred or stored through electrical phenomena, often measured in kilowatt-hours for consumption. Energy totals consumption over time; demand describes the rate of that consumption.
Electric vehicle charging: Electric vehicle charging transfers electrical energy to a vehicle’s battery, with power and timing depending on the charger and schedule. Coordinated charging can either amplify evening peaks or provide flexible demand.
