Electricity generation

Electricity generation is the production of electrical energy by converting other forms of energy, including chemical, mechanical, solar, and nuclear energy.

Electric generator: A device that converts mechanical energy into electrical energy, usually through electromagnetic induction. Turbines turn generators to convert rotational motion into electrical output.
Primary energy: Energy available in natural resources before conversion into fuels or electricity. It is the source energy that generation technologies transform into electricity.
Hydroelectricity: Electricity generated by harnessing the energy of moving or falling water. Hydropower converts water's gravitational and kinetic energy into electricity.
Dispatchable generation: Electricity generation that can be increased or decreased on demand within operational limits. It contrasts with output that varies mainly with available sunlight or wind.
Greenhouse gas emissions: The release of gases that trap heat in Earth's atmosphere. Fossil-fuel generation is a major source of energy-related carbon dioxide emissions.
Electromagnetic induction: The production of voltage when magnetic flux through a conductor changes. It is the conversion principle behind most turbine-driven electricity generation.
Electric power: The rate at which electrical energy is transferred or converted. Generation capacity and output are commonly measured as electric power.
Wind power: Electricity produced by converting the kinetic energy of wind into electrical energy. Wind turbines use a renewable mechanical energy source to drive generators.
Intermittent renewable energy: Renewable electricity generation whose output varies with weather or other external conditions. Its variable output differs from controllable generation that follows demand.
Air pollution: Harmful substances released into the atmosphere at concentrations that damage health or ecosystems. Combustion-based generation can emit pollutants such as sulfur dioxide and particulate matter.
