Emirate of Bukhara

A Central Asian state ruled by emirs from Bukhara from 1785 until its replacement by the Bukharan People’s Soviet Republic in 1920.

Emir: A title used by Muslim rulers and commanders, especially in parts of the Middle East and Central Asia. The emir was the state’s supreme ruler and gave the emirate its name.
Khanate of Bukhara: A Central Asian state centered on Bukhara that preceded the Emirate of Bukhara. The emirate arose from the khanate after the Manghit takeover.
Shah Murad: A Manghit ruler of Bukhara who adopted the title emir in 1785. His accession marks the conventional beginning of the emirate.
Silk Road: A network of overland trade routes linking East Asia with Central Asia, the Middle East, and Europe. Bukhara’s position sustained its role in long-distance commerce.
Emirate of Afghanistan: A state in Afghanistan ruled by emirs during several periods of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. It was a neighboring emirate, but developed under a different political and imperial trajectory.
Manghit dynasty: A Central Asian dynasty that ruled Bukhara from the mid-eighteenth century until 1920. Manghit rulers established and sustained the emirate’s ruling house.
Russian conquest of Central Asia: The nineteenth-century expansion of the Russian Empire into Central Asian territories. Russian conquest reduced Bukhara’s independence and territorial reach.
Nasrullah Khan: An emir of Bukhara who ruled from 1827 to 1860 and pursued centralization. His reign strengthened the emir’s authority before Russian expansion.
Bukhara–Tashkent trade: Commercial exchange between Bukhara and Tashkent, two major Central Asian cities. Regional trade connected the emirate’s markets to neighboring centers.
Khanate of Khiva: A Central Asian state centered on Khiva that lasted until its replacement by a Soviet republic in 1920. Khiva was Bukhara’s neighboring khanate and shared its eventual Soviet-era transformation.
