Emmanuel Joseph Sieyès

Emmanuel Joseph Sieyès was a French clergyman and political theorist whose defense of the Third Estate helped shape the French Revolution and whose constitutional ideas influenced the Consulate.

What Is the Third Estate?: A 1789 pamphlet by Sieyès arguing that the commoners constituted the French nation and deserved political power. This pamphlet made his case against the privileged orders a revolutionary manifesto.
National sovereignty: The principle that a nation, rather than a monarch or external power, is the ultimate source of political authority. Sieyès grounded legitimate government in the nation as a whole.
Napoleon Bonaparte: A French military commander who became First Consul in 1799 and emperor in 1804. Bonaparte partnered with Sieyès in the coup, then displaced his planned political arrangement.
Jean-Jacques Rousseau's The Social Contract: A 1762 political-philosophy work by Rousseau arguing that legitimate authority rests on a social pact and the general will. Rousseau’s account of sovereignty raised a tension with Sieyès’s emphasis on political representation.
