Emperor Meiji

The 122nd emperor of Japan, whose reign from 1867 to 1912 encompassed the country's transformation into a centralized modern state and imperial power.

Meiji Constitution: Japan’s 1889 constitution, which established a constitutional monarchy with sovereignty vested in the emperor. It defined the constitutional authority exercised in his name.
Tokugawa shogunate: The military government that ruled Japan from 1603 until its fall in 1868. Its authority was dismantled as power was formally returned to the emperor.
