Anglo-French Entente

The 1904 agreements between Britain and France settled several colonial disputes and established cooperation, easing longstanding rivalry without creating a formal military alliance.

Fashoda Incident: A 1898 confrontation between British and French forces in Sudan that nearly triggered war. Its resolution exposed the cost of rivalry and helped clear the way for rapprochement.
Declaration Respecting Egypt and Morocco: The central political declaration of 1904, setting out British and French understandings concerning Egypt and Morocco. It expressed the entente's core exchange: French latitude in Morocco and British freedom in Egypt.
Émile Loubet: President of France from 1899 to 1906, during the signing of the entente. His 1903 state visit to Britain publicly reinforced the rapprochement preceding the agreement.

Edward VII: King of the United Kingdom from 1901 to 1910, active in diplomacy and European royal relations. His 1903 visit to France helped promote improved relations with the French government.
Triple Entente: The loose diplomatic alignment among Britain, France, and Russia before the First World War. The 1904 agreement was one step in the wider alignment later known by this name.
Morocco: A North African kingdom whose independence became a focus of European rivalry in the early twentieth century. Britain recognized France's special position in Morocco in the 1904 settlement.
Senegal: A West African territory that became a French colony during the nineteenth century. Agreements on the Gambia–Senegal frontier formed part of the settlement's colonial provisions.
