Epic theatre

Epic theatre is a performance form that exposes theatrical construction and presents social conditions for critical examination rather than emotional absorption.

Verfremdungseffekt: A performance technique that makes familiar actions seem strange so their social causes become visible. Brecht’s estrangement effect is the best-known method for interrupting identification in epic theatre.
Bertolt Brecht: A German playwright, poet, and theatre director who developed and theorized epic theatre. Brecht gave epic theatre its most influential practical and theoretical formulation.
