Ernst Heinrich Weber

Ernst Heinrich Weber (1795–1878) was a German physician and physiologist whose experiments on touch and sensation helped establish psychophysics and the principle known as Weber’s law.

Weber’s law: A principle stating that the just-noticeable difference in a stimulus is approximately proportional to its magnitude. Weber derived this relationship from experiments comparing weights and tactile distances.
Leipzig University: A university in Leipzig, Germany, founded in 1409 and among Europe’s oldest universities. Weber spent much of his academic career teaching and conducting research there.
Eduard Friedrich Weber: A German anatomist and physiologist, and Ernst Heinrich Weber’s younger brother and frequent collaborator. The brothers jointly investigated muscle physiology and the circulation of blood.
Fechner’s law: A psychophysical law stating that perceived intensity grows approximately with the logarithm of physical stimulus intensity. Fechner derived this relationship by combining Weber’s proportional threshold with assumptions about sensation.
Just-noticeable difference: The smallest change in a stimulus that can be detected reliably under specified conditions. This threshold was the central measurement in Weber’s sensory experiments.
Comparative anatomy: The study of similarities and differences in the anatomy of different species. Weber’s early anatomical research included comparative studies of sensory structures.
Wilhelm Eduard Weber: A German physicist known for work on electromagnetism and electrical measurement, and Ernst Heinrich Weber’s younger brother. The Weber family’s scientific connections extended beyond physiology into physics.
Signal detection theory: A framework that separates sensitivity to a signal from decision criteria under uncertainty. It offers a later account of detection thresholds that distinguishes sensory capacity from judgment.
