Esotericism

Esotericism encompasses beliefs and practices centered on hidden or restricted knowledge, often transmitted through initiation, symbolism, or specialized teachings. It includes diverse religious, philosophical, and magical traditions rather than one unified doctrine.

Exoteric: Exoteric knowledge is intended for public understanding rather than restricted transmission. It names the public-facing counterpart to esoteric teachings.
Hermetism: Hermetism is a religious-philosophical tradition associated with texts attributed to Hermes Trismegistus. Its late-antique writings became foundational sources for Western esoteric thought.
Hermes Trismegistus: Hermes Trismegistus is a legendary sage formed by the blending of the Greek Hermes and Egyptian Thoth. Texts attributed to him became enduring authorities for Hermetic esotericism.
Alchemy: Alchemy is a historical tradition of inquiry and practice concerning the transformation of matter and, in some forms, spiritual purification. Alchemical symbolism often joined material transformation to inner spiritual change.
Mystery religion: A mystery religion is an ancient religious tradition whose rites and teachings were restricted to initiates. It resembles esoteric transmission but names a specific ancient religious form.
Initiation: Initiation is a formal process that admits someone into a group, practice, or stage of knowledge. Many esoteric traditions use rites of admission to mark access to teachings.
Gnosticism: Gnosticism is a modern scholarly term for ancient religious movements emphasizing saving knowledge, often of divine origins. Ancient movements centered on transformative knowledge shaped later accounts of esoteric traditions.
Marsilio Ficino: Marsilio Ficino was a fifteenth-century Florentine philosopher and translator of Plato and the Hermetic writings. His translations brought influential ancient esoteric texts into Renaissance Europe.
Astrology: Astrology interprets relationships between celestial patterns and earthly events or human lives. Its doctrine of correspondences links the heavens to human and terrestrial experience.
Secret society: A secret society is an organization that conceals some membership, activities, or teachings from outsiders. Organizational secrecy can accompany esotericism, but does not by itself make a group esoteric.
