Ethnonym

An ethnonym is a name used to identify an ethnic group. It may be chosen by the group itself or assigned by others.

Endonym: A name used by a group for itself or its homeland. An endonym is an ethnonym adopted by the group it identifies.
Autonym: A name a person or group uses for itself. Autonyms are self-designations that can function as endonymic ethnonyms.
Ethnic identity: A sense of belonging to an ethnic group, shaped by shared heritage and social identification. A group's chosen ethnonym can express and reinforce ethnic identity.
Roma people: An ethnic group with communities across Europe and beyond, often called Roma by its members. Roma illustrates the use of a widely adopted self-designation.
Exonym: A name for a people or place used by outsiders rather than by those named. An exonym shows how outsiders can supply an ethnonym.
Glossonym: A name for a language. Language names often overlap with ethnonyms, but the two do not always identify the same group.
