Eugen Bleuler

Eugen Bleuler (1857–1939) was a Swiss psychiatrist who introduced the term “schizophrenia” and developed an influential account of the disorder.

Carl Jung: A Swiss psychiatrist and psychoanalyst who worked with Bleuler at the Burghölzli psychiatric hospital. Jung’s association experiments informed the Zurich school’s study of schizophrenia.
Four As of schizophrenia: Bleuler’s four proposed fundamental symptoms: associations, affectivity, ambivalence, and autism. These four disturbances organized his account of schizophrenia’s core features.
Burghölzli: A psychiatric hospital in Zurich that became a major center for psychiatric research and reform. Bleuler directed this hospital while developing his clinical approach.
Schizophrenia spectrum: A grouping of psychotic disorders related to schizophrenia in symptoms, diagnosis, or presumed mechanisms. Modern spectrum thinking echoes Bleuler’s rejection of a single uniform disease course.
Emil Kraepelin: A German psychiatrist who classified mental disorders by their course and outcome, including dementia praecox. Bleuler renamed and reconceived Kraepelin’s dementia praecox as schizophrenia.
Association (psychology): The linking of ideas or mental representations through learned or spontaneous connections. Bleuler treated loosened associations as a primary disturbance in schizophrenia.
Dementia praecox: A psychiatric diagnosis coined by Emil Kraepelin for a group of disorders believed to begin early and often deteriorate. Bleuler rejected its implication of inevitable early dementia when proposing schizophrenia.
DSM-5: The fifth edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, published in 2013. Its diagnostic criteria show how contemporary psychiatry defines the disorder Bleuler named.
Sigmund Freud: An Austrian neurologist who founded psychoanalysis and proposed that unconscious processes shape mental life. Bleuler drew on psychoanalytic ideas while explaining symptoms through disrupted associations.
Ambivalence: The coexistence of opposing feelings, desires, or attitudes toward the same object. Bleuler made contradictory tendencies one of his four fundamental symptoms.
