Eustachian tube

The Eustachian tube is a canal connecting the middle ear to the nasopharynx. It helps equalize pressure across the eardrum and drain middle-ear secretions.

Tensor veli palatini: A muscle of the soft palate that helps open the Eustachian tube during swallowing and yawning. Its contraction pulls the tube open, allowing pressure equalization.
Eustachian tube dysfunction: Impaired opening or function of the Eustachian tube that disrupts middle-ear pressure regulation or drainage. It is the broad clinical consequence of inadequate tube function.
Auditory tube: An anatomical name for the canal connecting the middle ear with the nasopharynx. It is a standard synonym for Eustachian tube, not a separate structure.
External auditory canal: The passage that carries sound from the outer ear to the eardrum. Unlike the Eustachian tube, it connects the ear to the outside environment.
Middle ear: The air-filled chamber between the eardrum and inner ear, containing the auditory ossicles. The tube ventilates and drains this chamber.
Otitis media: Inflammation or infection of the middle ear, often associated with fluid behind the eardrum. Poor ventilation and drainage through the tube can promote middle-ear fluid and infection.
Pharyngotympanic tube: A formal anatomical name for the passage between the nasopharynx and middle ear. This name emphasizes the tube's two connected regions.
Semicircular canals: Three fluid-filled inner-ear structures that detect rotational head movements. They share the word “canal” but serve balance, not pressure equalization.
Nasopharynx: The upper part of the throat behind the nasal cavity and above the soft palate. The tube opens here, connecting the middle ear to the respiratory tract.
Barotrauma: Tissue injury caused by pressure differences between a body space and its surroundings. Rapid ambient-pressure changes can exceed the tube's ability to equalize middle-ear pressure.
