Extremophile

An extremophile is an organism that thrives in environmental conditions considered extreme, such as very high temperatures, high salinity, or intense acidity.

Protein thermostability: The ability of proteins to retain their structure and function at elevated temperatures. Heat-loving extremophiles stabilize proteins against unfolding and loss of function.
Temperature: A physical quantity that describes how hot or cold a system is. High and low temperatures define major settings inhabited by extremophiles.
Taq polymerase: A heat-stable DNA polymerase isolated from the bacterium Thermus aquaticus. Its heat tolerance made repeated high-temperature steps in PCR practical.
Thermus aquaticus: A thermophilic bacterium found in hot springs and the source of Taq polymerase. It illustrates how a hot-spring organism yielded a widely used laboratory enzyme.
Mesophile: An organism that grows best at moderate temperatures typical of many familiar environments. Mesophiles thrive in ordinary temperature ranges rather than unusually hot or cold habitats.
Compatible solute: A small molecule that helps cells balance osmotic pressure without disrupting cellular processes. Salt-tolerant extremophiles accumulate these molecules to counter high external salinity.
pH: A logarithmic measure of hydrogen-ion activity used to describe acidity or alkalinity. Extreme acidity and alkalinity are common axes for classifying extremophile habitats.
Polymerase chain reaction: A laboratory method that amplifies selected DNA sequences through repeated cycles of heating and cooling. PCR depends on thermostable enzymes first obtained from thermophilic organisms.
Halobacterium salinarum: A salt-loving archaeon that inhabits environments with very high salt concentrations. Its cellular machinery demonstrates adaptation to brines that inhibit most organisms.
Tardigrade: A microscopic animal known for surviving severe stress, often by entering a dormant state. Tardigrades are famous for stress tolerance, but survival without active growth differs from thriving.
