Fermi level

The electronic chemical potential in a solid, equal to the highest occupied energy at absolute zero and governing state occupancy at finite temperature.

Fermi–Dirac statistics: The probability distribution describing how fermions occupy energy states at thermal equilibrium. This distribution gives the occupation probability at each energy relative to the Fermi level.
Valence band: The highest energy band occupied by electrons in a semiconductor or insulator at zero temperature. Its upper edge anchors the Fermi level in undoped insulating materials.
Intrinsic semiconductor: A semiconductor whose electrical behavior is governed by thermally generated carriers rather than intentional doping. Its Fermi level lies near the middle of the band gap, with details set by band properties.
Vacuum level: The energy of an electron at rest just outside a material, used as an external energy reference. Unlike the Fermi level, it is a reference for escaping into vacuum rather than an occupancy boundary.
Electrical conductivity: A material's ability to carry electric current in response to an electric field. States near the Fermi level commonly control how readily electrons respond to an applied field.
Density of states: The number of available quantum states per energy interval in a physical system. The Fermi level selects occupied states from this energy-dependent supply.
Conduction band: An energy band in which electrons can move through a solid and conduct electricity. Its lower edge helps locate the Fermi level and set electron excitation energies.
Fermi-level pinning: The tendency of a material's Fermi level to remain near a particular energy despite changes in composition or contact conditions. Interface states can prevent the level from shifting as simple band-alignment models predict.
Dirac point: The band-crossing energy in materials whose electronic bands form a Dirac cone. In graphene, it marks a special band crossing and need not coincide with the Fermi level.
Electronic specific heat: The contribution of electrons to a material's heat capacity. Only electrons near the Fermi level are readily thermally excited in a metal.
