Fire regime

A fire regime is the characteristic pattern of fires in a place, described by their frequency, intensity, season, size, and spatial extent.

Fire frequency: The rate at which fires recur in a place over a defined period. Recurrence interval is a central measure of how often a regime burns.
Fire spread: The propagation of combustion through fuels across space. Spread determines the area and shape a fire can reach.
Prescribed burn: A deliberately ignited fire conducted under specified conditions to meet management objectives. Managers use planned burning to restore or maintain desired fire patterns.
Fire ecology: The study of fire’s interactions with organisms, ecosystems, and landscapes. It explains how recurring fire patterns affect ecological processes.
Climate change and wildfire: The effects of climate change on wildfire conditions, patterns, and impacts. Warming and drying can shift fire frequency, season, and extent.
Fire intensity: The rate of energy released by a fire, commonly expressed per unit length of fireline. Energy release distinguishes low-intensity surface fires from more severe burning.

Fire-adapted ecosystem: An ecosystem whose organisms or processes possess traits shaped by recurring fire. Regime changes can favor or disadvantage species adapted to particular fire patterns.
Indigenous fire management: Place-based practices through which Indigenous peoples use and manage fire in landscapes. Longstanding cultural burning can differ from regimes produced by fire exclusion.
