First Congo War

The 1996–1997 conflict in Zaire that overthrew President Mobutu Sese Seko and installed Laurent-Désiré Kabila as president.

Laurent-Désiré Kabila: A Congolese revolutionary who led the AFDL and became president of the Democratic Republic of the Congo in 1997. He headed the victorious rebel coalition and replaced Mobutu as head of state.
Rwandan genocide: The 1994 mass murder of Tutsi and moderate Hutu in Rwanda by extremist forces and their supporters. Its aftermath placed armed perpetrators and millions of refugees across Zaire’s eastern border.
Paul Kagame: A Rwandan military and political leader who became president in 2000. As Rwanda’s defense minister, he was a central architect of Rwanda’s intervention in Zaire.
Democratic Republic of the Congo: A Central African country whose territory includes the Congo River basin and mineral-rich eastern provinces. It emerged under this name after the war ended Mobutu’s Zaire.
Rwandan Patriotic Army: The military force of Rwanda’s post-1994 government, which intervened in eastern Zaire during the war. Its support for the AFDL and operations against Hutu armed groups helped drive the rebellion’s early victories.
Great Lakes refugee crisis: The mass displacement across Africa’s Great Lakes region following the 1994 Rwandan genocide. Refugee camps in eastern Zaire became sites of armed organization and a source of security fears for Rwanda.
Yoweri Museveni: Uganda’s president since 1986 and leader of the National Resistance Movement. Uganda backed the AFDL, joining the regional effort to remove Mobutu.
Second Congo War: A 1998–2003 war in the Democratic Republic of the Congo involving the government, rebel movements, and several neighboring states. Tensions between Kabila and former regional allies helped ignite this far wider conflict.
Kinshasa: The capital of the Democratic Republic of the Congo, located on the Congo River. The AFDL’s capture of the capital in May 1997 ended Mobutu’s rule.
Democratic Forces for the Liberation of Rwanda: A Rwandan Hutu armed group formed in 2000, with roots in forces that fled Rwanda after the 1994 genocide. Its predecessor forces in Zaire were among the armed groups Rwanda sought to defeat during the war.
