Kisangani

Kisangani is a city in northeastern Democratic Republic of the Congo, on the Congo River and the capital of Tshopo Province. It is the principal urban center near the river’s navigable limit from Kinshasa.

Henry Morton Stanley: A Welsh-American explorer and journalist whose expeditions mapped parts of Central Africa for European audiences. Stanley founded the trading station that became Kisangani in 1883.
Stanleyville: The colonial-era name for Kisangani, used from 1883 until the city was renamed in 1966. The name remains attached to several major events in the city’s history.
Congo River: A major Central African river system flowing through the Democratic Republic of the Congo to the Atlantic Ocean. The river links Kisangani to downstream cities and supports transport and trade.
Tshopo Province: A province in northeastern Democratic Republic of the Congo, established in 2015 with Kisangani as its capital. Kisangani is the provincial capital and the region’s main administrative center.
