Fish anatomy

Fish anatomy is the study of fishes’ structures and how their skeletons, organs, muscles, and sensory systems are organized.

Vertebral column: A segmented series of vertebrae that supports the body and protects the spinal cord. It forms the central axial framework in most fishes.
Fish locomotion: The movement of fishes through water using body undulation, fins, or other propulsion methods. Muscle and skeletal arrangements determine how body waves generate thrust.
Cartilaginous fish: A fish in the class Chondrichthyes, whose skeleton is primarily cartilage rather than bone. Its skeletal material contrasts with the bony framework of most familiar fishes.
Fish dissection: The systematic opening and examination of a fish to study its external and internal structures. Dissection makes organ positions and anatomical relationships directly observable.
Fish evolution: The evolutionary history and diversification of fishes. Anatomical similarities and differences provide evidence for relationships and change over time.
Cranium: The skull structure that encloses and protects the brain and supports sensory and feeding structures. Its shape and joints vary with fish feeding and sensory adaptations.
Ram ventilation: Water flow across the gills produced by forward swimming with the mouth open. It contrasts with pumping water across stationary gills using mouth and gill movements.
Bony fish: A fish in the clade Osteichthyes, characterized by a skeleton that is at least partly ossified. Its anatomy provides a contrasting plan to cartilaginous fishes.
Fish gill rakers: Projections on gill arches that help retain food particles or protect the gill filaments. Their form can reveal how anatomy relates to feeding habits.
Fish embryology: The study of fish development from fertilization through embryonic stages. Development shows how adult anatomical structures arise.
