Fish spawning

Fish spawning is the release of eggs and sperm into water for external fertilization. It often involves coordinated timing, specific spawning sites, and courtship behaviors.

External fertilization: Reproduction in which eggs and sperm unite outside the bodies of the parents. Fish spawning releases gametes into water, where fertilization occurs.
Spawning ground: A location where animals gather or reproduce by depositing eggs or releasing gametes. Protecting fish spawning grounds preserves places where reproduction occurs.
Pacific salmon: Salmon species native to the Pacific Ocean and its connected rivers. Pacific salmon migrate from the sea to freshwater streams to spawn, usually dying afterward.
Fish recruitment: The addition of young fish to a population or fishable stock. Spawning produces offspring, but only a fraction survive to join the population.
Fish reproductive behavior: Behaviors fish use to find mates, court, reproduce, and care for offspring. Courtship and coordination bring fish together when eggs and sperm are released.
Fish ladder: A structure that helps migrating fish pass barriers such as dams. Fish ladders can restore access to upstream spawning habitat.
Atlantic cod: A marine fish of the North Atlantic known for large spawning aggregations. Cod release eggs and sperm in open water, where currents disperse the eggs.
Larva: An immature animal form that differs substantially from its adult form. Fish larvae hatch from eggs and face a vulnerable dispersal and feeding stage.
Fish egg: The reproductive cell or developing embryo produced by a female fish. Eggs released during spawning must be fertilized and survive in the surrounding water.
Hatchery: A facility where eggs or young animals are incubated and raised under managed conditions. Fish hatcheries collect or produce eggs and support early development for stocking or farming.
