Fixed-wing aircraft

A fixed-wing aircraft has wings that remain stationary relative to its fuselage and generate lift as it moves through the air. It contrasts with rotorcraft, which generate lift with rotating blades.

Lift (force): The aerodynamic force perpendicular to an aircraft’s direction of motion through the air. Air flowing around the wings creates the upward force that supports the aircraft.
Aerodynamics: The study of air in motion and the forces it exerts on objects. It provides the physical principles behind fixed-wing flight.
Rotorcraft: An aircraft that uses rotating blades to generate lift and, often, propulsion. Rotorcraft can hover, while fixed-wing aircraft generally need forward speed to stay aloft.
Airliner: A fixed-wing aircraft designed to transport passengers on scheduled or charter flights. Airliners prioritize efficient long-distance transport and passenger capacity.
Wright Flyer: The powered aircraft flown by Wilbur and Orville Wright at Kitty Hawk in 1903. Its controlled, sustained flights demonstrated a practical powered fixed-wing aircraft.
Airfoil: A cross-sectional shape designed to produce aerodynamic forces as fluid flows around it. Wing cross-sections shape airflow and help determine lift and drag.
Fuselage: The main body of an aircraft, housing crew, passengers, or cargo. The wings and tail attach to this central structure.
Helicopter: A rotorcraft whose powered rotor provides lift and directional control. Its rotating rotor provides a direct contrast to stationary wings.
Cargo aircraft: An aircraft designed primarily to carry freight rather than passengers. Cargo missions shape loading systems, doors, and cabin layouts.
Wilbur Wright: An American aviation pioneer who developed and flew early controlled powered aircraft with his brother Orville. His experiments helped establish the principles of controlled fixed-wing flight.
