Flint sit-down strike

A 1936–1937 United Auto Workers occupation of General Motors factories in Flint, Michigan, that forced GM to negotiate with the union.

Sit-down strike: A labor protest in which workers remain inside their workplace and stop production. Flint workers prevented GM from replacing them or restarting production inside occupied plants.
United Auto Workers: A North American labor union representing workers in the automobile and related industries. The UAW organized the occupation and negotiated its settlement with GM.
GM–UAW agreement of 1937: The February 1937 agreement in which General Motors recognized the United Auto Workers as representative of its members. It ended the strike and established the union’s foothold at GM.
Edgar H. H. Scripps: A General Motors executive who managed labor relations during the Flint sit-down strike. His negotiations with the UAW helped bring the occupation to an end.
