Food deserts

Food deserts are areas where residents have limited access to affordable, nutritious food. The term describes an access problem shaped by geography, transportation, income, and food retail.

Food access: The availability and practical attainability of food for individuals and communities. Food deserts are defined by restricted access, not simply by the absence of shops.
Diet quality: A measure of how well a person's diet meets nutritional recommendations. Local availability and cost can shape the nutritional quality of what people eat.
Healthy food financing initiatives: Public-private programs that support grocery retail and healthy-food infrastructure in underserved areas. These initiatives use financing to attract or expand food retailers where access is limited.
Food swamp: An area where less nutritious food outlets are far more prevalent than healthy-food outlets. Food swamps describe an overabundance of unhealthy options rather than primarily a lack of healthy retailers.
Food retail: The sale of food through stores, markets, and other commercial outlets. Retail location and product selection determine what food is locally available.

Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program: A United States federal program that helps eligible households buy food. SNAP benefits can improve purchasing power, though they do not by themselves create nearby stores.
Food insecurity: A condition in which households lack reliable access to sufficient food. Unlike food deserts, food insecurity measures household-level hardship rather than neighborhood geography.
Public transportation: Shared passenger transport services operating on fixed routes or schedules. Transit can determine whether distant grocery stores are reachable without a car.
Diabetes mellitus: A group of disorders characterized by persistently elevated blood glucose. Diet-related health disparities are often studied in communities with limited food access.
