Forensic psychiatry

Forensic psychiatry applies psychiatric knowledge to legal questions and justice-system settings, including criminal responsibility, competence, risk, and treatment in custodial contexts.

Criminal responsibility: The legal attribution of blame for a criminal act, shaped by rules about intent and mental condition. Psychiatrists assess mental disorders relevant to legal tests of culpability.
Forensic psychological assessment: A structured evaluation using interviews, records, tests, and collateral information to answer a legal referral question. It supplies a systematic method for gathering evidence relevant to forensic opinions.
Clinical psychiatry: The medical specialty diagnosing and treating mental disorders in clinical settings. Its therapeutic alliance and patient-care duties differ from a forensic evaluator’s legal role.
