Free Soil Party

The Free Soil Party was a U.S. political party formed in 1848 to oppose extending slavery into western territories. It argued that free labor and small farmers should have access to western lands.

Wilmot Proviso: An 1846 proposal to prohibit slavery in territory acquired from Mexico. Its failed restriction became a rallying point for the party’s founders.
Martin Van Buren: The eighth U.S. president, who became the Free Soil Party’s presidential nominee in 1848. His nomination united antislavery Democrats with other Free Soil supporters.
Slavery in the United States: The system of forced labor and legal bondage imposed on millions of people of African descent in the United States. The party focused on preventing this institution from spreading into federal territories.
Compromise of 1850: A package of U.S. laws addressing slavery and territorial disputes after the Mexican-American War. Its settlement addressed the same territorial conflict that had built the party.
Mexican-American War: An 1846–1848 war between the United States and Mexico that transferred vast territory to the United States. The prospect of acquiring western land intensified conflict over slavery’s expansion.
Salmon P. Chase: An Ohio politician and antislavery leader who helped organize the Free Soil Party. He shaped the party’s strategy and later carried its antislavery politics into the Republican Party.

Charles Sumner: A Massachusetts senator and prominent opponent of slavery who entered the Senate as a Free Soil politician. His election gave the party a prominent voice in Congress.
