Furan

Furan is a five-membered aromatic ring containing four carbon atoms and one oxygen atom. It is a volatile liquid and a parent structure for many natural and synthetic compounds.

Aromaticity: A stabilization associated with cyclic, conjugated molecules containing a characteristic number of π electrons. Furan has six π electrons delocalized around its ring, satisfying the aromaticity rule.
Heterocyclic compound: A cyclic compound whose ring contains at least one atom other than carbon. Furan belongs to this broad family because oxygen is part of its ring.
Furfural: An aromatic aldehyde derived from furan, produced industrially from pentose-rich biomass. Furfural is a major furan derivative used as a chemical feedstock and solvent.
Volatile organic compound: An organic chemical that readily enters the gas phase under ordinary conditions. Furan’s low boiling point makes it volatile and capable of dispersing through air.
Hückel's rule: A rule predicting aromaticity in planar, cyclic, conjugated molecules with 4n + 2 π electrons. Furan’s ring has six π electrons, the n = 1 case.
Oxygen: A chemical element with atomic number 8 that commonly forms two covalent bonds. One oxygen atom occupies a vertex of furan’s five-membered ring.
Furfuryl alcohol: An alcohol containing a furan ring and a hydroxymethyl group. It is an important furan-derived intermediate, especially in resin production.
Carcinogen: An agent capable of causing cancer in living organisms. Furan is classified as carcinogenic based on evidence from animal studies.
Electrophilic aromatic substitution: A reaction in which an electrophile replaces a hydrogen on an aromatic ring. Furan undergoes this reaction readily, chiefly at its 2-position.
Pi bond: A covalent bond formed by sideways overlap of p orbitals, with electron density above and below a molecular axis. Delocalized π bonding gives furan its aromatic character.
