Tetrahydrofuran

Tetrahydrofuran (THF) is a five-membered cyclic ether with formula C₄H₈O. Its polarity and ability to dissolve many organic compounds make it a widely used solvent and chemical feedstock.

Grignard reaction: A carbon–carbon bond-forming reaction in which an organomagnesium reagent adds to an electrophile. THF coordinates magnesium and commonly serves as the solvent for Grignard reagents.
Cyclic ether: An ether whose oxygen atom lies within a ring of atoms. THF belongs to this structural family, whose ring size influences reactivity and physical properties.
Heterocyclic compound: A cyclic compound whose ring contains at least one atom other than carbon. THF is a simple oxygen-containing example of this broad structural class.

Lithium aluminum hydride: A strong reducing agent used to convert many carbonyl compounds into alcohols. THF is a common solvent for this moisture-sensitive hydride reagent.
Ether: An organic compound in which an oxygen atom is bonded to two carbon-containing groups. THF’s ether oxygen gives it polarity and the ability to coordinate metal cations.
Polarity: Unequal distribution of electrical charge within a molecule or chemical bond. THF’s polar C–O bonds help it dissolve many polar and moderately nonpolar substances.
Volatility: The tendency of a substance to vaporize under given conditions. THF evaporates readily, shaping both its usefulness as a solvent and its inhalation risk.
Polytetramethylene ether glycol: A polyether diol used to make elastomers, spandex, and other flexible polymers. Industrial ring-opening polymerization of THF produces this important polymer precursor.
Lewis base: A chemical species that donates an electron pair to form a bond. THF’s oxygen lone pairs bind metal centers in reagents such as Grignard compounds.
