Fuselage

The main body of an aircraft, housing its crew, passengers, or cargo and connecting major structural components such as the wings and tail.

Airframe: The load-bearing structure of an aircraft, including its fuselage, wings, and empennage. The fuselage is one of the airframe’s principal structural assemblies.
Monocoque: A structural design in which an outer shell carries most of the loads. Some fuselage designs rely on the skin itself to carry substantial loads.
Narrow-body aircraft: A passenger aircraft with a single aisle and a relatively narrow cabin. Its fuselage diameter is shaped around a single-aisle passenger layout.
Wright Flyer: The powered aircraft flown by Orville and Wilbur Wright at Kitty Hawk in 1903. Its open structural framework shows how unlike early aircraft bodies were to modern fuselages.
Flying wing: An aircraft configuration in which the wing provides most of the aircraft’s lift and contains much of its volume. It minimizes or removes the distinct body that defines a conventional fuselage.
Aircraft loads: Forces and moments acting on an aircraft during flight, ground operations, and landing. These loads determine how the fuselage must carry and transfer forces.
Semi-monocoque: A shell structure reinforced by internal frames, stringers, or longerons. This is a common fuselage arrangement that shares loads between skin and stiffeners.
Wide-body aircraft: A passenger or cargo aircraft with a wide cabin, commonly arranged with multiple aisles. Its larger fuselage accommodates more passengers or cargo across a wider cross-section.
Junkers J 1: A 1915 German all-metal aircraft with a stressed-skin structure. It demonstrated a metal airframe approach that influenced later fuselage construction.
Blended wing body aircraft: An aircraft design that blends its central body smoothly into broad wings. It combines cabin volume and lifting surface rather than separating them into fuselage and wings.
