Gandhara

Gandhara was an ancient region centered in present-day northwestern Pakistan and eastern Afghanistan. Its position along major routes connected South Asian, Central Asian, and Hellenistic cultures.

Taxila: An ancient city and archaeological site in present-day Pakistan, known for its role in trade and learning. A major city of ancient Gandhara and a hub on routes linking the region to Central Asia.
Silk Road: A network of overland routes that connected East Asia with Central Asia and regions farther west. Routes through Gandhara linked South Asia with Central Asian trade corridors.
Rigveda: An ancient collection of Sanskrit hymns and the oldest text of the Vedas. Its references to Gandhara offer early evidence for the region’s place in South Asian traditions.
Mathura art: An artistic tradition centered on Mathura in northern India, known for sculpture in red sandstone. Its Buddhist images developed alongside Gandharan art but used distinct materials and visual conventions.
Peshawar: A city in present-day Pakistan, historically known as Purushapura and a center of the ancient Kushan Empire. Ancient Purushapura was one of Gandhara’s leading urban centers.
Khyber Pass: A mountain pass connecting present-day Pakistan and Afghanistan through the Spin Ghar range. This passage made Gandhara a gateway between the Indian subcontinent and Afghanistan.
Mahajanapadas: A group of sixteen major states in northern India during the sixth and fifth centuries BCE. Gandhara was one of these states before larger empires incorporated it.
Sanchi: An ancient Buddhist complex in central India, best known for its Great Stupa and carved gateways. Sanchi shows Buddhist artistic development in India beyond Gandhara’s northwestern crossroads.
Gandharan art: A body of sculpture and architectural decoration associated with ancient Gandhara, often combining South Asian subjects with Hellenistic forms. Its distinctive visual synthesis is the best-known cultural legacy of the region.
Indo-Greek Kingdom: A Hellenistic kingdom in parts of Central and South Asia, founded after the Greek expansion into Bactria. Indo-Greek rule brought Greek political and artistic traditions into Gandhara’s cultural orbit.
