Kandahar

Kandahar is a city in southern Afghanistan and the capital of Kandahar Province. It has long been a major political, commercial, and cultural center in the region.

Alexander the Great: King of Macedon who built an empire across parts of Asia in the fourth century BCE. Ancient tradition links Kandahar’s name to Alexandria, though the city’s origins predate Alexander’s campaigns.
Arghandab River: A river in southern Afghanistan that flows toward the Helmand River. Its valley supplies water to agricultural land near Kandahar.
Mullah Omar: The founding leader of the Taliban, who emerged from southern Afghanistan in the 1990s. The Taliban’s early organization and authority were strongly associated with Kandahar.
Siege of Kandahar (1737–1738): A siege in which Nader Shah captured Kandahar from the Hotak dynasty. The city’s fall ended Hotak rule there and opened the way for Nader Shah’s campaigns.

Taliban: An Islamist political and military movement that has ruled Afghanistan during two periods. Kandahar became the movement’s principal base during its rise to power.
Battle of Kandahar (1880): A British victory over Afghan forces near Kandahar during the Second Anglo-Afghan War. The battle secured British control of the city and helped end the war.
Shrine of the Cloak: A mosque and shrine in Kandahar associated with the Cloak of the Prophet. It is among the city’s most significant Islamic religious sites.
