Gansu

Gansu is a province in northwestern China, stretching from the Tibetan Plateau toward the Gobi Desert. Its Hexi Corridor contains historic routes of the Silk Road.

Hexi Corridor: A narrow route between mountains and desert in northwestern China, historically linking Central Asia with the Chinese heartland. This corridor runs through Gansu and carried much of its Silk Road traffic.
Tibetan Plateau: A vast, high-elevation region of Central and East Asia, bordered by major mountain ranges. Its northeastern edge rises in southern Gansu and shapes the province’s highland environments.
Silk Road: A network of overland trade routes connecting East Asia with Central Asia and regions farther west. Its northern routes crossed Gansu through the Hexi Corridor.
Ma Bufang: A Hui Muslim military and political leader who governed Qinghai during much of the Republican era. His family’s power extended into neighboring Gansu during the fragmented politics of the period.
Lanzhou: The capital of Gansu, located on the Yellow River in northwestern China. Lanzhou is the province’s largest urban center and its main administrative hub.
Dunhuang: A city in Gansu known for its Buddhist cave temples and position on historic Central Asian trade routes. Dunhuang became a major oasis and cultural center at the western end of the Hexi Corridor.
Gobi Desert: A large, cold desert spanning parts of northern China and southern Mongolia. The Gobi’s southern margins meet northern Gansu, constraining routes and settlement.
Han dynasty: A Chinese imperial dynasty that ruled from 206 BCE to 220 CE, with an interregnum from 9 to 23 CE. Han expansion westward secured routes and commanderies in what is now Gansu.
Hui people: A predominantly Chinese-speaking ethnic group in China, historically associated with Islam. Hui communities are among Gansu’s longstanding populations, especially in Linxia.
Lanzhou–Xinjiang railway: A railway linking Lanzhou in Gansu with Urumqi in Xinjiang through northwestern China. It follows the historic westward corridor while serving modern transport and trade.
