Wei River

The Wei River is a major tributary of the Yellow River in north-central China, flowing east through Gansu and Shaanxi provinces.

Yellow River: The Yellow River is a major river of northern China and the second-longest river in the country. The Wei joins the Yellow River, contributing water and sediment to its middle reaches.
Qinling Mountains: The Qinling Mountains are a major east–west mountain range in central China. They form the southern boundary of the Wei River valley in Shaanxi.
Zhengguo Canal: The Zhengguo Canal is an ancient irrigation canal built in the Wei River valley during the Qin state. It diverted Wei River water to expand farmland in the Guanzhong region.
Zhou dynasty: The Zhou dynasty ruled much of China from approximately 1046 to 256 BCE. The Zhou established their early political center in the Wei River valley.
Weihe Plain: The Weihe Plain is a broad agricultural lowland formed around the Wei River in Shaanxi. The river spreads across this plain as it crosses Shaanxi.
Gansu: Gansu is a province in northwestern China, extending from the Tibetan Plateau toward the Hexi Corridor. The Wei begins in Gansu before flowing east into Shaanxi.
Weihe River irrigation: Weihe River irrigation is the use of river water and connected channels to cultivate farmland in the Wei valley. Irrigation turns the river’s seasonal flow into a resource for agriculture.
Han dynasty: The Han dynasty ruled China from 202 BCE to 220 CE, with a brief interruption by the Xin dynasty. Its capital Chang'an stood in the Wei valley, making the river part of an imperial core.
Jing River: The Jing River is a major tributary of the Wei River in Shaanxi Province. It is one of the Wei’s principal tributaries.
Shaanxi: Shaanxi is a province in north-central China, encompassing the middle Wei River valley. Most of the river’s course and its fertile plain lie within Shaanxi.
