Gao

Gao is a city on the Niger River in eastern Mali. It served as a capital of the Songhai Empire and remains a regional center.

Songhai Empire: A West African empire that flourished along the Niger River from the fifteenth to the sixteenth century. Gao became one of its political capitals and principal cities.
Sunni Ali: The Songhai ruler who expanded the empire through military campaigns from 1464 to 1492. His conquests established Gao’s power over a broad stretch of the Niger.
Trans-Saharan trade routes: Caravan corridors crossing the Sahara that linked North African markets with Sahelian cities. Routes through the desert brought merchants and goods into Gao.
Battle of Tondibi: The 1591 battle in which a Moroccan army defeated Songhai forces near Gao. The defeat marked the collapse of Songhai imperial power based around Gao.
