Gayatri Chakravorty Spivak

Gayatri Chakravorty Spivak is an Indian literary theorist, feminist critic, and philosopher whose work examines colonial power, representation, and the limits of speaking for marginalized people.

Subalternity: A condition of political and social exclusion that limits groups’ access to power and representation. Spivak uses the term to examine those excluded from dominant political and intellectual systems.
Can the Subaltern Speak?: A 1988 essay by Spivak examining whether marginalized people can speak within systems that erase or recast their speech. This essay crystallizes her account of subalternity, representation, and intellectual responsibility.
